Dry roast 200 gms of Aval (Poha ) , red or white for three to four minutes , stirring constantly .
Just grind it coarsely ( like Rava ) .
Heat a kadai , temper mustard , channa and urad dals , hing , chillies and curry leaves .
You will need Exactly twice the measure of water as that of Aval , for this Upma .
You can add the tomato puree , say Half a cup , and reduce the amount of water accordingly .
Add this water + tomato puree to the kadai , and add required salt .
When the water just starts to boil , add the Aval powder .
      Keep stirring constantly .
The water will be absorbed in minutes , and the Aval Upma will be ready to serve.
Add a tsp of ghee for flavour if you want , and coriander leaves .
This is my method . I have not used tomato puree so far . But I think you can try this .
